Thousands of Christians throughout New Zealand put aside denominational and cultural differences to gather at different venues on Pentecost Sunday for the largest prayer gathering in history. Prayer houses, conference and community centres, churches and open-air venues from Kaitaia to Dunedin were filled with worshippers taking part in the Global Day of Prayer, which was celebrated in more than 200 countries. 

In the Te Wananga Aotearoa Campus in the South Auckland suburb of Mangere there was a strong multicultural emphasis with services for Chinese, Cambodian, Vietnamese, African and Korean churches running throughout the day.

From 8pm to 10pm young people congregated in Aotea Square in the heart of Auckland City for a more youth-focused event.

They worshipped, sang and huddled in small groups to pray fervently for their youth leaders and about many of the issues young people nowadays face. In areas such as Taumarunui, Inglewood, Wellington, Masterton, Christchurch and Waimate combined church services were held.

Although the service in Taumarunui followed the Global Day of Prayer format it was held on the 20th to allow a number of churchgoers to go to Wellington for another combined church service at Elim International Church. A number of people then went to Parliament grounds for a special time of prayer together.

Prayer rooms and houses were also made available for people to pray in places like Kaitaia, Whangaparaoa, Karori (Wellington) and Waimate. A number of churches in Whangarei used the Kauri Lounge of the Okara Park Rugby Stadium for their gathering, while in Dunedin prayer started in the Regent Theatre in the town centre at midnight and continued for 24 hours.

At Tira Ora Lodge, a Christian community which hosts visitors from all over the world in Pelorus Sound, Marlborough, nearly 200 candles were lit for the nations participating in the meeting. In Hamilton four gatherings were held in four corners of the city from 7am to 8pm on the day. Prayer co-ordinator John Fulford, of Auckland, said he was encouraged by the increased support from people willing to get involved and plan the event in the different locations. Mr Fulford said the main scripture for the prayer day – Corinthians 7:2-14 – was also meant for Christians, who were called to turn from their wickedness and repent so God will bless them. Tim Dong, of Auck-land’s New Hope Chinese Church who attended the Chinese service in Mangere, said he and his friends wanted to break down the barriers between the Chinese churches in Auckland. There were about 70 Chinese churches in Auckland and the problem was, he said, that most of them rarely joined together.

 Won-Kon Bong, of Northwest Baptist Church in Auckland, said Korean pastors in New Zealand had been praying together for years and had the same Spirit as the day of prayer. “This is a time for the different ethnic churches to come together with Maori and Pakeha to intercede and pray for this nation,” said Mr Bong.

“Each ethnic group has its gifts from God that they can share in this nation and we Koreans hope to share our gift of intercession.

“At the same time we also want to learn from other ethnicities ... The Global Day of Prayer is a wonderful opportunity for churches to come together as a family of God to overcome cultural differences and at the same time show to the community we can work together.”

Prayer co-ordinator in Whangarei, Lyndsay van der Hulst, said the organisers were delighted to get 140 people from eight different denominations and about 13 different churches at the Kauri Lounge in the rugby stadium.

“More turned up than last year and we had a very powerful time,” she said. 

Carolyn Biesiek said those who attended the combined churches service in Inglewood praised and worshipped God in song and prayer.

They also interceded for various parts of the world – including those who were persecuted or imprisoned for their faith, for the affluent countries where wealth could blind eyes to Jesus, for salvation, for missionaries and missions and for world governments. “At one stage we also symbolically laid our hands on a map of the world and prayed for whatever countries were under our hands.”
